Drawing underpins the creative practise of Susan Cross. The development of ideas are distilled and refined through a continuous reflexive process based on the investigation of materials. The relationship between drawing and making is particularly evident in her series of work with vitreous enamel; chased lines overfired with multiple enamelled layers and exposed through careful subtraction. Textiles are a deeply rooted passion that continue to inspire Susan’s work, whether in the form of borrowed techniques or exploring visual references. Winter Furrow l & ll, are inspired by extensive research into 16 th /17 th Century Elizabethan Blackwork embroidery, these brooches in particular relate to a fine example of this particular genre of embroidery found in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow. The chased and enamelled panels are set onto linen embossed silver sheet, oxidised black with an oval cut out on the reverse thus drawing the eye into revealing drawn, decorative metalwork.
