Muirhead paints and draws objects of curiosity and bodies with an intense voyeuristic undertone. She peers at her subjects through the lens of the female gaze and focuses on tactility, texture and manic detail. The scenes she creates are intended to be relatable but unnerving. Ornaments and objects are lovingly rendered while flesh and skin are tangible, pulsing and raw. Her subjects know they are being watched and the work explores the idea of performance and silent connection. There is no other context in which we are permitted to leer and scrutinise in this way and the work alludes to the strangeness and artifice of the situation. A low brow impulse in a highbrow, academic context.
Sarah Muirhead is a figurative artist born in Glasgow. Graduating from ECA in 2009, she was nominated by Kirsty Wark as one of the UK'S 10 New Sensations. Solo exhibitions in Lazarides and Leyden Gallery were followed by international group shows and commissions for Oxford University and Leith theatre. Her exhibition, "Scopophilia' was named in the top 5 by White Chapel Gallery during Frieze week.
