My work revolves around interdisciplinary exploration between sculpture and painting. I am drawn towards the prospects of interplay between shape, texture and colour and the emotional and sensory reaction that it might elicit from the viewer. My practice is process-based and the direct experience of material (typically plaster of Paris) very much informs the outcome. The objects - sculptures often take the shape of people and animals present in my surroundings, familiar or remembered environments. The relationship between memory, forming of identity and the subconscious are becoming increasingly important subjects in my work.
Ola Rek is a multidisciplinary artist. Born in Poland, she gained MFA in Sculpture in The Academy of Fine Art in Wroclaw. She was a recipient of RSA Ottilie Helen Wallace Prize in the 93rd Annual Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. She lives and works in Edinburgh.
