‘Loch A’an’ is part of an ongoing series called Hybrid Landscapes. It features figures journeying through imagined landscapes composed of inky mountains and patterned surfaces. Simultaneously, the painting recalls origami paper, aboriginal dot art, Japanese inkwash landscapes, Celtic knotwork, tempera mural, family photo albums, Highlandism and hanging scrolls. The paintings traces the artist’s roots and routes in Japan, Australia and Scotland.
Mia Takemoto is a British-Japanese born in Australia and currently living in Scotland. She is completing a Masters in Fine Art and History of Art at the University of Edinburgh. Takemoto’s art practice celebrates cultural hybridity and transnational movement. Her paintings are influenced by the cultures and places she is rooted in and has routed through. These roots and routes are visualised in hybrid landscape paintings that incorporate techniques, imagery and materials from Scotland, Japan and Australia.
